AOTY Portraits – Australian of the Year Awards 2024 – Salty Dingo 2024

Senior Australian of the Year, Yalmay Yunupinu, spent 40 years teaching children in their own Yolnu language in north-east Arnhem Land. It was a journey of determination, defiance and, occasionally, some Dr Seuss. She told The Big Issue Australia more.

Nikki Smith, who moved to Washington DC earlier this year, is already making an impact with her art and advocacy. She moved from a tent to a shelter and has been working on her writing which is now being published in the local street paper Street Sense. And she’s working with an initiative to help women experiencing homelessness become involved in advocacy like her.

People experiencing homelessness in Grants Pass, Oregon, US say that it is impossible to avoid being punished for having nowhere to live. Now, their case is going before the Supreme Court. Local street paper Street Roots reports.
