INSP Chief Executive Maree Aldam

I remember buying my first Big Issue on Glasgow’s Byres Road when I was about 14. I was visiting Glasgow (from the remote West Highlands), out shopping with my friend who told me that The Big Issue was a great new magazine, sold by homeless people; so buying it also meant helping that person directly. I remember thinking that this was just about the coolest thing ever.

That was more than 20 years ago and I feel lucky now that my job allows me to work with more than 100 magazines like The Big Issue, in 35 countries worldwide.

One of my favourite aspects of my job is hearing the inspiring and often surprising (and sometimes heart-breaking) stories from the 27,000 people that sell street papers each year. I have no doubt that selling street papers is a worthwhile and important job. But I also know from our vendors that it’s a hard job; particularly early in the year when sales are low and the weather is cold.

I’m a little nervous about next week, but I hoping that with my warmest clothes on, and some sales tips from the real Glasgow vendors, I’ll sell lots of magazines…
